Australian Idol: Bittersweet night as John Van Beek misses out, Gisella Colletti through to top six

It was a bittersweet night for WA’s teenage talents as John Van Beek missed out on a spot in the top six, while 17-year-old Gisella Colletti lives on to fight for our State’s first-ever Australian Idol crown.

Van Beek, 19, performed Justin Bieber’s hit Ghost on Sunday and was forced to depart the competition on Monday night along with Canberra’s Emma Jones.

“It’s been a massive ride,” he told the West Australian moments after being eliminated.

“You know, I was going into this really not expecting a lot, but it’s really taken me on a ride.”

Wishing the best for Perth mate Colletti, the former gymnast was grateful to have shared the experience with not just a worthy competitor, but a friend.

“It’s all about the people you meet. And seeing Gisella get through was just so amazing, she fully deserves it,” he said.

With Australia choosing the songs contestants would perform on Sunday, each artist was encouraged to unleash a previously unseen side to their artistry.

Equipped with her powerhouse vocals, Colletti had her sights on matching pop sensation Ariana Grande in a deviation from her emotional ballads in performing hit Break Free. According to Australia, she nailed it.
