Sister Act: Beloved Aussie singer Casey Donovan lands first lead role in musical opening at Crown on Saturday

Casey Donovan has landed her first lead role in a musical, and what better character to score than one played by Whoopi Goldberg.

Sister Act the Musical opens at Crown Theatre on Saturday night, where it is set to bring the antics of the 1992 film to life on stage.

The Sydney-born singer and actress stars as Deloris Van Cartier alongside two other Aussie talents, Genevieve Lemon as Mother Superior and Rhonda Burchmore as Sister Mary Lazarus.

“It’s been such a great show to be a lead in. Dolores is such a fun, witty, front-footed character. She really is just this ball of energy,” she said.

“I pay a lot of respect to Whoopi on stage, but the great thing about musical theatre is making a character your own.

“Whoopi’s got these beautiful little moments in the movie where she gets that cheeky little smile, or she’s up to something, so I’ve tried to bring that into the musical theatre world.”

Donovan said the people of Perth are sure to be up dancing in the aisles with the award-winning musical featuring original music by Tony and eight-time Oscar award-winner Alan Menken (Disney’s Aladdin, Enchanted, The Little Mermaid).

“I know a lot of people are like, but it’s not the music from the movie. I was like, no, it’s so much better,” Donovan said of Menken’s work.

As the last stop of the tour, Donovan encouraged the people of Perth “to come along, grab a ticket, have some fun, let your hair down and, let’s all raise our voice together”.
