Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll qualified fifth and sixth, while Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto will line up seventh for Sauber with reigning champion Max Verstappen eighth fastest for Red Bull.

In a post-race interview, a bewildered Piastri seemed surprised by Ferraro’s unexpected pace.

“I wasn’t expecting to be second to a Ferrari this weekend, but he’s done a good job,” he laughed. “It’s going to be a fun race tomorrow.”

Leclerc– who took his 27th career pole on Saturday – also seemed shocked, shouting “Mamma mia, oh my god” after he realised he’d be starting first on the grid

“Today I don’t understand anything about Formula One,” he said in a post-race interview: “I have no words, it is probably one of the best pole positions I’ve ever had because I did not expect that.”

Meanwhile, a frustrated and Lewis Hamilton was knocked out in Q2, with the seven-time world champion declaring himself “useless”. He will start the race in 12th position.

“It’s me every time. I’m useless, absolutely useless,” Hamilton said after qualifying.

“The team have no problem,” he continued. “You’ve seen the car’s on pole. So we probably need to change driver.”
