Dove Creek 19, Dolores 18 (Game 2)

After being limited to just three hits in their Tuesday afternoon opener at the Soper Sports Complex, Dove Creek bounced back with 15 hits in the second contest to split the doubleheader.

Dolores continued its hot hitting, making it four games in its past five in which the Bears have scored double-digit runs. Junior Hayden Lancaster paved the way for the DHS offense, accounting for five hits and eight RBIs between the two games, while classmate Gus Vaughn added four hits and scored six runs to complement his complete-game gem with 12 strikeouts on the mound in Game 1.

The Bears scored six runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to flip the script on the hosts, who led 2-1 through four innings on the strength of an RBI from junior Konner Spigner and strong pitching from senior Trevan Ivie.

DHS continued its hot finish to Game 1 with four runs to open the second encounter, only for Dove Creek to jolt its offense to life with eight runs in its first opportunity at the plate. Spigner and junior Cael Beanland combined for seven RBIs as the teams traded runs in a seesaw battle.

Dove Creek never relinquished its advantage, however, scoring four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to lead 19-13 heading to the final frame. The Bears scored five times but could not complete the improbable comeback as the two teams earned one win apiece from the wild afternoon.

Dove Creek takes on Sierra Grande and Sanford on Friday, April 10, while Dolores meets Ignacio on Saturday, April 11, at Joe Rowell Park for a noon opening pitch.
