Fragment of Bayeux Tapestry discovered in Germany

A fragment of the world-famous Bayeux Tapestry has been discovered in an estate located at a state archive in northern Germany.

The piece of tapestry found its way to Schleswig during World War II, the Schleswig-Holstein State Archive said on Monday.

It is part of the estate of renowned Schleswig-Holstein textile archaeologist Karl Schlabow (1891-1984).

Schlabow was reportedly charged by the SS with the re-measurement of the Bayeux Tapestry from 1941 as part of a German team of scientists.

In the course of this task, the fragment was taken from the underside of the tapestry, according to the archive. Further details about the discovery are to be disclosed at a press conference on March 25.

The Bayeux Tapestry is French cultural property, the state archive said. Therefore, the fragment is to be returned this year to the French republic, the owner of the tapestry.

The nearly 70-metre-long and 53-centimetre-wide tapestry is a UNESCO Memory of the World heritage item.

The medieval masterpiece depicts the landing of Normans from France in England in the year 1066.
