Moving on from a TV role as beloved as Dr Meredith Grey was always going to be an ask for Ellen Pompeo. For many, she’ll always be synonymous with the doctor in scrubs at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Though after her performance in this eight-episode limited series (which Pompeo also executive produces), fans might start looking at her in a whole new light.
Based on a bizarre true story, this is all about an American family who adopted a six-year-old Ukrainian girl named Natalia, a youngster with a rare form of dwarfism, who it transpires may actually have been an adult in disguise.
And yes, you just read that right.
Pompeo plays Kristine Barnett, the woman who took in Natalia, only to suspect shortly after that she was actually a woman in her twenties, hoodwinking them all. Within two years of adopting Natalia, the Barnetts had taken legal steps to change her age to 22, ordered her to live alone in an apartment, and left to start a new life in Canada — and that’s not even the strangest part.
Kristine also claimed that Natalia had made threats to harm the family, that she had attempted to poison Kristine’s coffee with bleach, and that she had placed thumbtacks on the stairs for her to stand on — all allegations Natalia denies.
This story was everywhere a few years back. The TV adaptation dramatises it, purporting to explore it from different points of view. Viewers will likely be horrified and intrigued in equal measure.
This has to be seen to be believed, and even then . . .
Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi are back as Darby and Joan, two boomers out on the road, and out finding themselves slap bang in the middle of unfolding crimes. Unfortunate! OK, so they’re not technically seeking these out, though trouble certainly finds them, and in ep one Jack (Brown) finds himself in the middle of some family drama out on a farm. This is an acquired taste — you can bet your elderly parents absolutely love it.
Each week Joe Lycett is taking comedians — and us viewers — on a 48-hour mini-break to somewhere interesting, with “all the boring bits” of their trip taken out. As concepts go, this is one I can get behind. Joe’s a generous host, and in episode one he’s off to Malaga in Spain, where he’s showing the reliably hilarious Irish comedian David O’Doherty the sights. Take note, Getaway: THIS is how you do a travel show. Adore this silly series.
This Shonda Rhimes-produced comedy is all about a murder in the White House. Uzo Aduba steps up to play a world famous detective, Cordelia Cupp. She’s Miss Marple-meets-Jessica Fletcher, and she’s there investigating a suspicious death during a state dinner — Kylie Minogue (yes, the real one) is guest of honour at the shindig. This old-fashioned parlour-room whodunit is heaps of fun, though I was hoping for more. Will persevere.

There’s a popular podcast all about their strange story. After decades of no contact, Melissa (Annaleigh Ashford) finds herself face to face with her once-beloved father, who lures her back into his life from jail, with the promise of a confession to yet another murder. This one will chill you.
