The AFL says Thursday nights are the second-best time slot for television/broadcast audiences, slightly behind Friday nights, so the league has increased the number of Thursday night games this year from 16 last year to 23, having the time slot in all but two rounds during the home and away season.
The average for Thursday nights dropped slightly to 44,091 after last week’s game.
While there has been an increase in Thursday night crowds, it is also arguable that fixturing higher-drawing teams has played a role in that increase, with Carlton meeting Richmond in round one before 80,009 and Collingwood in round four (82,058), while the Anzac Day eve clash between Melbourne and Richmond (71,635) also fell on a Thursday night.
Carlton have a total of six Thursday night games – with further clashes coming against Port Adelaide (round 16), Brisbane (round 18) and Hawthorn (round 20). All bar one of those games was fixtured in Melbourne.
The Bombers have a total of five Thursday games, with forthcoming games against Fremantle (in Perth) this week, and Greater Western Sydney (round 19), plus a Friday-night clash with St Kilda in the penultimate round (23).
Lyon posed the question of whether Thursday nights were as attractive for crowds following last week’s loss to the Bulldogs.
The Saints coach, responding to a reporter highlighting the turnout on Thursday, said: “And you’re diving into it. What do Thursday night crowds really look like for most teams in the competition?”
Lyon, in a continued exchange with the reporter, added: “Have Thursday nights been very tough for all other clubs as well? It’s a binary, a yes or no.”

The Saints coach went on to cite another St Kilda official’s view that Thursday nights “are really difficult Most clubs are really struggling because kids have got to get up for school [after] Thursday nights.”
The AFL increased Thursday night games and made all of them available live on free-to-air TV with Channel Seven as part of the new broadcast trade-off that handed all Saturday games – including Saturday-night matches – exclusively to Foxtel in most markets, including Victoria.
