Songs that spark Albany residents’ most treasured memories are set to be performed live at the Albany Town Hall later this month in a moving concert that will demonstrate the connection between music and memory.
Held on April 24, the free Albany Song Story Concert will involve a cast of singers performing a collection of tunes submitted by Albany community members.
Professional musicians from the SongStory Project will share the stage with Albany senior citizens choir Sunset Singers, Youngs Siding Jazz Quartet the Zazzies and students from Albany schools.
More than 40 people sent in a song choice with background anecdotes detailing the personal memory that made it so special to them.
Albany mayor Greg Stocks said the touching event will be a lovely way to express the connection between music and community.
“The Song Story Project offers a chance for people to reflect on the songs that have shaped their lives,” he said.
“By sharing those stories publicly, we’re not only honouring the memories of individuals but celebrating the power of music to connect us across generations.”
The SongStory project was founded by Penny Reynolds and has successfully run across several regions, including the Shire of Mundaring, the City of Perth and the City of Mandurah.
Sunset Singers member John Locke said he hopes to do credit to peoples most treasure memories.
“It’s especially gratifying to know that the songs we will be singing will rekindle fond and joyful past memories and emotions for our audience,” Locke said.
“It is a lovely way to connect across generations.”
Doors will open at 12.30pm for a 1pm start.
The project is delivered in partnership with the SongStory Project and supported by the Department for Communities.
