Sheep and hemp farmer Jarrad Wrigley has a busy life working hard on the land and spends his downtime singing and making music.
The only thing missing is a special lady to share his rural, creative lifestyle with and that’s where Farmer Wants A Wife comes in.
“The opportunity arose for me to join, and it’s something that I considered to be a great way to meet people who understand what my life is all about and see more about me than just what meets the eye,” the 21-year-old from Stanthorpe, Queensland — five hours from Brisbane — tells PLAY.
“I just thought it would be a way to hopefully meet a lifelong partner.”
While the young farmerhad a small taste of working in the entertainment industry as a performing musician, having an entire production crew capture his every move and invade intimate moments felt “alien-like.”
“Not only do I have cameras in my face and on my potential partners, it’s also those vulnerable moments that people don’t normally see, it was very sort of alien, but I enjoyed it,” he says.
Not one to sit down and watch TV, Wrigley admits he had only seen “bits and bobs” of previous seasons of the hit dating show, and it was purely the opportunity to find love that drew him in.
Wrigley is looking for a boisterous partner who can pull him into line if he’s being too much of a clown.
“They need to be able to have fun; life’s too short and sometimes too serious. I’m a bit goofy, they need to be a bit goofy too,” he says.
“I need someone who’ll push me as hard as I push them so we can achieve our dreams together.
“I care about traditional values like common decency, respect, integrity and discipline. I’d also like someone who is family-oriented.”
The lucky woman who will share a life with him won’t be required to move to chilly south-east Queensland straight away, as Wrigley is hoping to buy back his great-grandfather’s farm in New South Wales.
“I would potentially have to move anyway, so we would live here (Queensland) for a little while and then we’d both move into the family home,” he says.
“The farm was sold before I was born, but I have always wanted to take it back and raise my kids on it.”
Viewers can expect to see Wrigley’s musical passion shine through on this season as he attempts to swoon his ladies with a country love song or two.
“There was one song that I wrote on the show which has now become such an important song to me because that got me through quite a few tough decisions,” he says.
He credits his Nanna for raising him with a steady sonic diet of Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash.
“I was born with a gift, telling stories and writing songs,” he says.
So much so that after several years of developing his skills, Wrigley is on his way to releasing his first album.
“I released a couple of songs back in 2022 and I sort of had an indication as to where my musical sound was going to go but I’ve spent the last few years really just cutting my teeth, travelling the country meeting new people, hearing new stories and it’s really only been in the last 12 months that I’ve started to really find my sound,” he says.
“I’ve been putting off recording the album for a couple of years, and I finally got back into the studio in 2024.”
Farmer Jarrad said his time on the show was “an absolutely wonderful experience filled with joy” and “a great chapter of my life that I have fun memories (from)”.
“If I was to talk to your average farmer I would say, just go into it with an open mind,” he says.
“I’d absolutely love to have something to do over the next few years with the future farmers and just let them know that if they ever need someone to talk with who’s been through that experience, I would absolutely love to (do that). It is a big culture shock coming from your normal day-to-day farm life to all of a sudden you’ve got a full production team around you, and I think if you haven’t seen that before it would be very overwhelming.”
Farmer Wants A Wife premieres on Monday at 7.30pm on Seven and 7plus and airs Mondays and Tuesdays.
