The opening of Fazz’s Indian Kitchen and Bar sees Mohammed Miah return to business in Darlington, having owned Indian restaurants in the town over more than three decades.
The restaurant, opened in partnership with his cousin, experienced chef Fazlur Rahman, is in the Bondgate building that Mohammed first opened as The Garden of India in the 1980s.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was carried out by the President of Darlington Rotary Club, Jeff Mann, who attended with his wife Liz, who is President of Darlington Inner Wheel.
Jeff told guests: “It’s an honour to be asked to perform the official opening of Fazz’s Indian Kitchen and Bar, and to formally welcome the return to business of Mohammed Miah – widely known as the Darlington Curry King – and his cousin Fazlur Rahman.
“I’m sure many of you will recall that Mohammed first opened this building as The Garden of India back in the 1980s and went on to have several restaurants in the town. He supported local charities, and became well known in our community, so it’s great to see him back where he belongs.”
Jeff also welcomed Fazlur, who has built a great reputation as a chef, with restaurants in different parts of the country.
Guests at the opening event also included the Deputy Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Sonia Kane, and the chair of St Teresa’s Hospice, Carol Charlton, as well as journalists and a host of friends and associates built up by Mohammed over the years.
In reply to Jeff’s speech, Mohammed said he was “delighted” to be opening the new restaurant, which will serve Indian street food dishes, alongside traditional curry classics, and he had huge confidence in Fazlur’s skills as a chef.
“It’s great to be back and to welcome you here tonight – you are like family to me,” said Mohammed.
Fazlur added that his intention was for the restaurant to offer “something different for Darlington”.
