Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan was dreaming of Derby targets with Tambeloa after he broke through at his third start and first at city level at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Tambeloa, a $60,000 buy at the Magic Millions, was third at Newcastle and Hawkesbury in his first starts and started a $14 chance in the 1600m maiden for two- and three-year-olds on Wednesday.
After racing behind the leading pair, Tambeloa, by first-season sire Tagaloa out of Gamble Me, took over at the 100m and won by three-quarters of a length.
“I think he’s going to relish getting over a longer trip,” Buchanan said.
“Dreams are free. Maybe a Derby is in his picture down the track. I wouldn’t discount it.
“He’s still a big baby at the moment, but he’s clean-winded, he’s a good mover and why not. He can stay, he relaxes, he’s got a great temperament and he’s still a colt.”
Randwick trainer Ron Quinton was pleasantly surprised when debutant Clancy dug deep late to win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
The son of Territories fought hard under pressure from race favourite, Chris Waller-trained Kokatahi, over the last 100m of the 1100m maiden for two- and three-year-olds to give apprentice Madeline Owen a fifth metropolitan win of the season.
“I didn’t expect him to win, or even run a place really, but that’s fantastic for the owners,” Quinton said.
“It’s so good for Maddie, too. She’s done a lot of the education work of this horse. It’s a very good reward for her.”
Waller finished his 15th consecutive Sydney trainers’ title on 142 wins for the season. Next best Bjorn Baker had a win with Fairway Star to finish on 90.
Jason Collett rode Fairway Star, giving him 72 city wins and second spot behind James McDonald (83).
