Amy Tombling, the owner of All Dolled Up, had no idea that her passion for hair and beauty would lead to such success.
Starting her career at just 20 years old in her parents’ house, Amy never expected to have a career, let alone a ‘thriving’ business.
Amy said: “When I left college, the idea of having a successful career wasn’t really something that seemed achievable.
“I just did what I loved, and I’m so glad it turned into what it is today.”
Amy’s journey started in her parent’s home and later expanded into a small room in a local dance school before quickly growing into a salon in Eston.
As demand surged, her space became too small, and Amy was faced with the challenge of finding somewhere new.
She eventually found the perfect location in an industrial estate- a blank canvas that she knew could turn into something special.
She said: “I have seen similar concepts in other cities, but nothing like it in the region.
“I knew it would stand out, and I am just so excited that it has been recognised in this way.”
All Dolled Up at Thompson Yard, Middlesbrough boasts a striking pink façade, a ball pool, a bar, and a unique welcoming atmosphere where you go for an ‘experience’ as well as a beauty service.
Its ‘one-of-a-kind’ vibe caught the attention of the BBC when they were searching for a salon to feature in their new show the ‘Smoggie Queens’.
Amy, on maternity leave at the time, was getting her nails done in the salon when a special visitor arrived to ask for the manager.
Initially unsure of what was happening, Amy was thrilled to hear that her salon would be featured as the location for the show’s fictional pampering spot.
“It was amazing to be asked, a somewhat dream come true, and what made it even better was that they used actual local businesses instead of studios.
“For them to choose mine as one of the recognisable locations in the North East is such an honour.”
The salon’s bright pink exterior and its fun, luxurious interior are prominently featured in the show, where the character Lucinda and others are shown getting pampered in a space that closely mirrors the real All Dolled Up.
The BBC even left the salon’s branding visible on screen, something Amy is particularly grateful for.

The exposure has been overwhelming. “It’s been amazing to see clips from the show shared everywhere, even on The One Show,” she says.
“Since the episode aired, I’ve seen a huge increase in engagement and searches for the salon. It’s incredible to see it all come to life.”
During filming, Amy had to close the salon for the day, but she stayed on set to ensure everything went smoothly, something she described as both ‘exciting and surreal’.
With the success of the BBC feature, Amy is hopeful that more opportunities will follow.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
