If you’re wondering why cinema schedules are packed with family films, there are more than nine billion good reasons and only one of those is because the school holidays are upon us.
It’s no secret that times have been tough for the movie industry in recent years, but family fare has played a crucial role in propping up Hollywood.
Led by smash hits such as Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4, family movies collectively generated more than $9.15 billion at the global box office.
So far this year, three of the top-5 highest grossing movies in the world are family films: A Minecraft Movie, Snow White and Dog Man.
All three are showing this school holidays, giving parents something to entertain the kids with – for a few hours, at least.
Another option is The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which is a rollicking adventure featuring beloved characters Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, a classic cartoon odd couple.
Both characters are performed by American voice actor Eric Bauza, who’s following in the footsteps of the immortal Mel Blanc.
Bauza currently supplies the voices for a cornucopia of Looney Tunes favourites, including the one and only Bugs Bunny, Marvin the Martian, Elmer Fudd and Foghorn Leghorn.
It’s literally a dream come true for Bauza, who grew up entertaining his family with his gift for doing impressions.
“I would get laughs, and that would always be the reason for me to keep finding the next voice to do, like, impress them with another different impression that I just discovered last week,” he tells The Sunday Times.
The voice actor says times have changed significantly from his childhood spent watching the Looney Tunes and other cartoons every Saturday morning.
“It’s funny how kids these days get Bugs Bunny from internet memes, and don’t even know who this character is,” he says.
But Bauza says watching The Day the Earth Blew Up is a chance to turn back the clock.
“You can always count on the Looney Tunes for a good laugh,” he says.
“That’s all we’re here for. You know, if the troubles of real life are getting to you, get your family, your kids, and a big bucket of popcorn, and go to the theatre and watch our movie.
“And, when you step out of the film, you’ll have trouble figuring out what’s the cartoon and what’s real life.”
Jack Black and Jason Momoa star in the hit adaptation of the sandbox video game of the same name. From the director of Napoleon Dynamite, and boasting a similar comedic style, this could be a tough watch for adults who don’t like that film or Black. But for everyone else, especially fans of the game, it’s an absolute hoot.
Disney’s much-maligned live-action remake of 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs probably isn’t as bad as you’ve heard. If you go in with low expectations and try not to get freaked out by the CGI effects, you’ll get through it.
The frenetic pace of this film is classic Looney Tunes, but there are some jokes in here that are very edgy for a kids movie. That’s the difference between these animated characters and what you get from Disney.
This film won best animated feature at the Oscars this year for good reason. It’s a masterpiece. It came out a while ago, so you won’t find it playing everywhere, but it’s worth seeking out one of the remaining sessions during the holidays.
This animated film is loosely based on a book Charles Dickens wrote about Jesus Christ. It’s a little weird, perhaps, but you can’t knock the voice cast, which includes Oscar Isacc as JC, and three Oscar winners, Kenneth Branagh, Forrest Whitaker and Ben Kingsley.
Our very own Isla Fisher stars alongside comedian Pete Davidson in this adaptation of the hugely popular book series of the same name by Dav Pilkey. The movie has mega business at the global box office, with fans of the books appreciating this faithful depiction of a half-man, half-dog police officer. Good fun.
This is more of a PSA than a recommendation. Don’t be fooled by the “unicorn” in the title and the presence of Wednesday star Jenna Ortega – Death of a Unicorn is NOT suitable for small children. Take a little kid who loves unicorns to this, a bona fide horror movie, and you’ll traumatise them for life. That said, it’s quite good.
