Hello and welcome to our live coverage of a match that will have huge consequences for Ange Postecoglou’s future in the Premier League. It’s the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final between Tottenham Hotspur and Eintracht Frankfurt, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London.
I’m Vince Rugari, and this is … big.
Folks will quibble on the reasons why and who to blame, but nobody can disagree with this: it’s been a disastrous season for Spurs and Postecoglou. They’re languishing in 14th place on the EPL ladder and have been knocked out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
It’s been widely speculated that in order to save his job, Postecoglou needs to deliver the Europa League for Tottenham Hotspur, which would be their first piece of silverware of any sort in 17 years. We don’t know for sure whether that’s how the club is looking at this situation, but in the cut-throat world that he now operates in, it wouldn’t shock anyone.
We won’t get any certainty out of this morning’s clash, since it’s the first leg. But we will some level of understanding about whether Postecoglou can still get a tune out of this Spurs side, which has been wrecked by injury this season and yet, now that they have all their injured stars back, haven’t put together a complete, top-quality performance in many, many weeks. This is the moment to do exactly that, and establish some sort of lead in this tie to take into next Friday morning’s away leg in Germany.
We’ll have team news coming up for you shortly. Kick-off is at 5am AEDT. Watch along on Stan Sport, and/or follow along here for all the key updates.
