Virgin Media users offered vital free upgrade – check your Wi-Fi router now

If you have Virgin Media Wi-Fi in your home, then now could be a good time to check your router that’s probably stuffed behind the TV. The UK Internet Service Provider (ISP) is currently on a mission to get all of its users off of older technology, and there’s a good reason why you don’t want these devices plugged into your home.

Some of Virgin’s much older Wi-Fi boxes are no longer receiving security updates, which means they could be much more susceptible to bugs and even attacks from cyber crooks trying to steal online data.

The UK Government also recently updated the law, which means ISPs must offer Wi-Fi devices that can be kept safe.

“Today marks a new era where consumers can have greater confidence that their smart devices, such as phones and broadband routers, are shielded from cyber threats, and the integrity of personal privacy, data and finances better protected,” said Julia Lopez, UK Data and Digital Infrastructure Minister.

This means ISPs, including Virgin, need to make sure all of their devices comply.

As spotted by the team at ISPreview, some Virgin users are now receiving letters telling them that an upgrade to a Hub 4 router is available.

“We’re aware you’ve got one of our oldest Hubs, either a Hub 1, Hub 2 or a Hub 2 AC,” the message explains.

“Although they still work, they no longer receive security updates. The UK Government has updated the law about telecommunications networks and keeping you safe online, and we need to offer you a free Hub replacement.

“The good news is, our Hub 4 is more secure, faster and offers improved power consumption.

“There’s no need to change your current package or sign a new contract.”

Even if you haven’t had a letter through the post or email land in your inbox, you can still check your router and see if you are eligible for something better.

If the router has a more curvacous appearance, like the one pictured above, it’s likely that you need an upgrade. Hub 3 and Hub 4 routers have a more box-shaped design with sharper edges.

If your equipment is well past its best, expect to be switched to something better very soon.
