Cummings, who also had the option to train at Godolphin’s Carbine Lodge stables at Flemington, said the invitation from HKJC “came around very quickly”.

He said his decision revolved around security and what was best for his young family and his career. He will now take a season off from training and use the time to organise, travel, meet people and learn the “ins and outs of the Hong Kong racing system”.
Trainers in Hong Kong have the chance at excellent prizemoney, while having most of their costs covered by the club. Low taxes, racing just twice a week and a maximum of 70 horses each are also attractions.
“I have a passion for training horses and taking up the contract with Hong Kong Jockey Club gives me the opportunity to focus on training horses, and not worry about the rest of it that can come with doing that here,” he said.
“I have been in a privileged position to do that in recent years. I did it on my own before that, so I know what it’s like.
“And at the same time, it’s a great adventure for my family. It’s a wonderful place to raise children. I have four kids under 10, so I get a chance at a good age for them to make the move and raise them in a place that gives them a real-world view.
“If I had have told my younger self that I’d train from Randwick for a number of years, then train for Sheikh Mohammed or eight years in the Godolphin blue, then I’d be accepting a contract to train in Hong Kong, I’d have been bewildered by that as a plan.”
