Winslet to make directorial debut with Netflix film


Kate Winslet is set to make her directorial debut with a Netflix drama written by her son.

The 49-year-old British actress has been a mainstay in Hollywood for decades, having starred in hits like Titanic and The Reader but she will be stepping behind the camera for the first time to helm the Netflix drama film Goodbye June, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.

According to the outlet, the Academy Award winner will also produce and star in the project, and will appear alongside Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, and Dame Helen Mirren.

Winslet – who is married to Edward Abel Smith and has 11-year-old Bear with him but also has Mia , 24, with her ex-husband Jim Threapleton and Joe, 21, with second husband Sam Mendes – has seen her middle child write the screenplay for Goodbye June.

The actress will also produce the film alongside Kate Solomon, who previously worked with her on 2023 film Lee, in which Kate played the title role of the famed wartime photographer.

The synopsis for the film reads: “Goodbye June is a present day, fictional drama, set in England. A touching, yet humorous story which sees a fractured group of siblings pull together under sudden and trying circumstances.”

No release date has been announced for the drama yet, but on-location production will begin “soon”, according to Netflix.
